Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR)
Currently, when an outage occurs, customers are manually returned back to supply via remote switching from our control room or a truck visit. There is limited automation as each fault is analysed manually by our controllers.
FDIR will allow our networks to ‘self-heal’ and return supply automatically to the maximum number of customers possible following a fault. The technology locates and isolates the fault before seeking opportunities to switch the electricity network automatically, squeezing the outage area to the smallest possible number. When enabled, the opportunity exists to restore customers on faulted feeders in under 60 seconds.
The FDIR Program is now in place with the first FDIR enabled feeders expected to be operate in 2016 on the Powercor network and 2017 in the CitiPower network.
