The Powercor Country Festival kicked off on Sunday with a sell-out match in Bendigo. The crowd of 8,399 watched the Geelong Cats defeat Essendon in  the JLT Community Series match.

Before the game, a community lunch was held hosted by journalist Nathan Templeton and attended by 100 guests.

During the event, a panel discussion was held, introduced by AFL legend Kevin Sheedy, and featuring Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards, mother to four AFL players Maree Selwood and VFL Women's squad member Cassie Blakeway.

The panel discussed the progress that has been made in women's sport to date and the work that needs to continue to ensure diversity in the sport.
