We offer apprenticeships in a number of areas, offering paid work while you gain an industry recognised trade qualification.
If you are interested in a career in an electrical trade, then you could be trained by some of the best in the business.
Our four-year apprenticeships combine TAFE study and on-the-job practical experience. You’ll work outdoors in all conditions, and you’ll need to be comfortable working on ladders and elevated work platforms. Take a closer look at the apprenticeships we offer.
Your main role will be to construct and maintain overhead and underground electrical lines and structures.
You will construct and maintain electrical substations, including finding and fixing faults with electrical plant and equipment.
You’ll install, maintain and test energy metering and associated communication equipment.
Your work will involve installing and maintaining cables in underground pipes and trenches, and also terminating cables on electrical equipment.

Our apprenticeships run for four years, and they include TAFE study (about 8-10 weeks a year) and on-the-job training. The final year of your apprenticeship is all on-the-job training. When you’ve completed the apprenticeship, you’ll have a recognised trade and may be offered a permanent position to work with us.
It depends on how many the business requires operationally, however we have a commitment to take on 10 apprentices every year. That being said, 2014 marked our largest intake ever, with a total of 49 Apprentices and Trainees coming on board.
We offer four types of apprenticeship. They are:
- Powerline Worker - responsible for constructing and maintaining overhead and underground electrical lines and structures.
- Electrical Fitter - responsible for constructing and maintaining electrical substations .
- Meter Technician - responsible for installation, maintenance and testing of energy metering and associated communication equipment.
- Underground Cable jointer - responsible for installing and maintaining cables in underground pipes and trenches and terminating cables on electrical equipment.
You’ll learn specific industry knowledge, plus we’ll also teach you about workplace safety and working as part of a team.
When you’ve completed your apprenticeship, you’ll have transferrable skills across the industry, plus a trade-based qualification.
- Powerline worker – Certificate III in ESI Distribution (Power line)
- Electrical fitter – Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician)
- Meter technician – Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician) specialising in metering communications
- Underground Cable jointer – Certificate III in ESI Cable Jointing
You get paid while you learn, plus you’ll be starting a career with Victoria’s largest electricity distributor. So, you’ll be trained by the best as you work towards a recognised qualification.
We want people who have a passion for power or communications in the utilities sector. A pre-apprenticeship course in electrotechnology is preferred but not essential.
You need to be the type of person who is comfortable working at heights and/or outdoors in any weather conditions. We want enthusiastic people who are willing to listen and pay attention to health and safety. You’ll also enjoy problem solving, particularly with mathematical problems, and dealing with people.
Our apprentices are covered by an EBA and the salaries associated with each year in the apprenticeship is determined in a set structure. In 2014, the starting salary for a first-year apprentice is about $625 a week, plus 10.5% superannuation. Your salary increases each year, with a fourth-year salary of about $938 a week.
If you are above the age of 21, you are classified as an Adult Apprentice and in your first two years in the apprenticeship, you will receive second-year wages (in 2014, the salary for this is $729 a week, plus 10.5% superannuation).
If we employ you after your apprenticeship is finished, you can expect annual bonuses and increased salary, depending on your performance.
We also offer flexible work arrangements, generous leave allowances, health and wellbeing programs, and social club membership.

An online application will generally take about 30 minutes to complete. Applicants will be asked to answer some general questions and provide a resume and cover letter.
Once applications have closed we undertake a thorough screening process and if short-listed you may be contacted to undertake either a brief telephone discussion and/or completion of Numerical, Aptitude and Mechanical Reasoning testing.
Further selection activities may involve a face-to-face panel based interview and participation in a Practical Field exercise (held at the Regional Depot of your preferred location).
Employment will be subject to the successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (which includes hearing test, colour blindness and physical examination) and relevant drug and alcohol test, to assess fitness for work.
Once you’ve submitted your application, an email will be sent to you to let you know we’ve received it. Applicants are then contacted once the application closing date has expired and all applications have been reviewed. Due to the large number of applications we receive, we can only contact unsuccessful applicants by email.
Yes, the offer of employment will depend on you successfully finishing your school year. Your letter of offer will also state you start date, normally early in the following year.
