Canteen Grant

Cricket club canteens are essential to celebrating a win.

Not many people know the value of a cricket club canteen better than Merv Hughes.

The former Aussie cricketer admits he’s spent a fair bit of time around them in his days. So who better to celebrate the announcement of CitiPower and Cricket Victoria’s latest round of canteen grant recipients than the man himself!

We invited Merv down to Caulfield Cricket Club who are one of 21 recipients of grants this season, to see firsthand how the canteen grant has benefited the club.

Colder drinks for the fans. Fresher oranges for the players. Hotter pies for club functions. It all means more money can be raised through the canteens and invested back into the club.

Over the past seven years, 112 local clubs have received some much needed funds from CitiPower and Cricket Victoria to upgrade their club’s social hubs.

The CitiPower and Cricket Victoria Canteen Grant program has been offered annually since 2018 and with this latest round of funding, has distributed a total of $439,000 in grants.

Our funding has enabled the replacement of 50 refrigerators, the funding of electrical upgrades to 26 club canteens, and the replacement of 20 ovens. Not to mention the cost of replacing appliances such as bain maries, pie warmers, and dishwashers.

"Canteens are essential to celebrating a win, I should know! So cheers to CitiPower and Cricket Victoria for making the canteen grant happen."

Merv Hughes

Clubs are invited to apply for up to $5,000 in grants to address electrical safety issues and improve services provided by cricket club canteens and clubhouses across the CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy network regions.

The next round of canteen grant applications will open on 20 October 2025.  To find out more, keep an eye on the Cricket Victoria website.
